In the event of a Motor Claim

  • Ensure all parties are okay.
  • Warn other motorists by using your hazard lights.
  • If necessary call the emergency services.
  • Exchange details with the other drivers, including full names, address, registration numbers, telephone number, insurance company names and if possible policy numbers.
  • Obtain details of witnesses and police officers if any are in attendance.
  • If you have a camera in the vehicle and it is safe to do so, it may assist any disputed motor claim if photos are taken of the vehicle positions before they are moved.
  • At the scene, do not admit liability or accept any responsibility.
  • Call your insurance company at the earliest opportunity.
  • If there is any injury, or you do not exchange details at the scene then you MUST report the matter to the police within 24 hours.
Commercial and non motor claims
Do not delay!
  • Most insurers will have a 24-hour helpline, so please check your policy documents under the section ‘How to make a Claim’ and report the incident to your insurers or ourselves as soon as possible. A claim form may also be required.
  • Most policies have set time limits for reporting incidents and your claim could be rejected if you do not report it promptly.
  • Burglary, theft and malicious damage claims should be reported to the police immediately and a crime reference number obtained.  If you fail to notify the police then you could prejudice your claim.

Minimise the loss

Minimise the loss

It is a condition of almost all policies that the policyholder should take action to mitigate the loss. For example, premises must be secured or boarded up as quickly as possible in the event of damage to windows or doors. The basic principle is to act as if you had not been insured. If you do not, then you could end up paying out of your own pocket for part of the claim.
Disposal of damaged articles

Disposal of damaged articles

Do not throw anything away that has been damaged until the Insurance company has inspected it and/or authorised its disposal.
Photographs

Photographs

Taking photographs of your property prior to and after an incident occurring can be a useful way to help prove the nature of the articles in your possession and damage caused by the incident.
Receipts

Receipts

Collect receipts and try to list what is missing or damaged beyond repair. If you haven’t got receipts, then instruction manuals or even original boxes and containers can help prove that you actually had an item.

Recording of Events

Write down everything that has happened with regards to the incident whether it’s a burglary or a motor accident. This type of information will be required when you notify the police (where appropriate) and will also be required when you notify your Insurer or ourselves of an incident against which you wish to make a claim.
